Selecting a laptop and making sure it will work.
Things to look out for with cheap, older laptops.
- The battery might be trash. You can probably buy a replacement on ebay, or, buy an AC/DC inverter, which can be about $15. Make sure it can handle the wattage of your laptop power supply.
- USB 1.1 ports might work, but it hasn’t be tested yet. USB 2.0 ports are known to work.
- Older laptops may have a dual-scan display instead of TFT, or their display backlight may be dim from age. This can make them extremely hard to use, especially in sunlight.
- USB support before Windows 2000 was not very good. Get a laptop that has at least Windows 2000.
- Network support, especially WiFi, can be useful. But a simple flash drive could probably get the job done as far as transferring files.
- OS updates like service packs and frameworks may be required for MPSCAN to run. These can be very large files and may be difficult to transfer to an older laptop if it does not have a network connection or if you try to use a flash drive to transfer several hundred megabytes over USB 1.1. If possible, see if you can install MPSCAN on a laptop you are thinking of buying. Perhaps bring it with you on a flash drive.

SCI interface
The Chrysler ECU diagnostic connector (located in the engine compartment) communicates with diagnostic tools like the Chrysler DRB-II, OTC series, and, hopefully, your laptop, via a bus called the “SCI” bus.
This is Chryslers’ proprietary serial communications interface to allow the outside world to talk to the ECU.

The SCI connector is located in the engine compartment, usually near the ECU.

NON-BoostButton USB to SCI cables
Non-BoostButton USB to SCI cables based on the FTDI chipset likely need a few things done to them:
- Manual configuration of the FTDI chip in the USB to SCI cable.
- Protecting the FTDI chip from the 12V voltage seen during flashing on the SCI bus. (put link to more info here)
USB to SCI cables from BoostButton already have these settings and features out of the box and no changes are required.

Download MPSCAN

Installing MPSCAN
Unzip the MPSCAN.zip file. It contains 2 files, an mpscan.msi file and a setup.exe file. This is a standard installation convention. You should always execute the .exe file which is basically a wrapper around the .msi file and will do additional file checking for any program prerequisites.
Instructions needed:
connecting cable to vehicledownloading and installing MPSCAN- opening MPSCAN and confirming the correct port is selected
- getting vehicle ready for communication (key on/off)
- attempting to communicate with the vehicle in MPSCAN (sensor/fault code reading is simplest/fastest to do?)
- creating vehicle profile, gauge layout, and logging live data at a standstill

- System requirements for MPSCAN/MPTUNE/BoostButton SCI (OS, frameworks/other packages, USB port type)
- Specifically: how old and cheap of a laptop can I buy off craigslist that will work with MPSCAN/MPTUNE for logging/flashing/tuning?
- Dealing with multiple COM ports (common on laptops with bluetooth and other serial devices)
- What to do if all the above doesnt work (What else can go wrong?)
